NFTY-Northeast’s Sub-Regional Events: Creating Community within a Community
NFTY Participant: NFTY can feel big and sub-regions allow for that extra sense of family. They help to build a smaller community within the Northeast, and it gives me an extra excuse to see my friends that live nearby more often.
NFTY is a movement that builds strong, welcoming, inspired communities through teen-powered engagement. Together, we pursue tikkun olam, personal growth, youth empowerment, and deep connections, all rooted in Reform Judaism. NFTY’s Northeast Region includes Connecticut (excluding Fairfield County), Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, upstate New York and Montreal, Canada.
NFTYites love to be together, but sadly, we can’t be together all the time. In NFTY-NE, we created 5 sub-regions – North, South, East, West & CT – to help us maintain an ongoing connection to our NFTY friends and create communities within community. Sub-regions are sort of the like NFTY Neighborhoods. With the creation of sub-regions, NFTY-NE can hold smaller, more accessible events throughout the year and empower local youth groups and teen leaders to take on communal leadership roles.
This year, NFTY-NE tried something new by adding “sub-regional event days” to the NFTY-NE regional calendar. A Sub-Regional event is a local event that is open to all and is intended for teens in a specific geographic area. These events are planned and hosted by a Temple youth community, individual teens, or NFTY-NE Sub-Regional Chairs. NFTY-NE has eight Sub-Regional Event Chairs. These teens focus on building community and creating local events in their sub-region. Sub-Regional events are generally low-barrier-to entry ranging in length of 2-4 hours and can be planned for a variety of ages.
Our fall sub-regional event day was a big hit with a Bob Ross painting night in Glastonbury, CT, a Coffee House in Chelmsford, MA, Ice Skating in Worcester, MA, and Fun & Games in Framingham, MA. Most recently, Temple Beth Shalom in Needham, MA hosted a Planned Parenthood Fundraiser Dance and FROGY will be hosting their annual Shabbaton at Temple Etz Chaim in Franklin, MA.
While NFTY-NE may be a home away from home for so many, sub-regions create neighborhoods and events that help the entire region feel connected, even when we are spread from Montreal to Albany, and from the Berkshires to the Cape. Getting to know our neighbors allows us to feel more locally linked while creating a bridge back to the incredible community that is NFTY-NE.
Our next sub-regional event day is scheduled for April 26, 2020. Coming soon...NFTY-NE Sub-Regional Event FAQs! If you or your community is interested in hosting a NFTY-NE Sub-Regional event, please contact Joie Magnone at firstname.lastname@example.org.
